There are multiple ways one can travel from Mumbai to Coorg. However, here we list the most convenient ways to reach Coorg, from Mumbai. Having said that, no matter how you travel , your second leg of the journey will always be by Road, as Coorg does not have an airport or Railway Station. The good news is , Airports and Train Stations are located within 3 hours from Coorg.
1. By Flight : Mumbai To Mangalore Or Kannur
Coorg does not have an airport. The closest airports are Mangalore, Kannur (Kerala) and Mysore.
The quickest and best way to travel from Mumbai to Coorg is by air, followed by road. The easiest is to take a flight from Mumbai to Mangalore or Kannur, and then take a bus or cab to Coorg. Kannur, Mangalore and Mysore are almost equidistant from Coorg. Bangalore is a bit farther compared to Mangalore or Kannur. If you are planning to do the second leg of your journey by bus, to Madikeri in Coorg, frequent buses are available from Mangalore. Mangalore to Madikeri is about 3 hrs by bus. There are buses from Kannur too, but not as frequent. Airports are located outside the city, so make sure you have checked travel options from the airport to the City bus station. To summarize, the most convenient way is to travel to Mangalore and then take a cab or bus to Madikeri. The next best option is taking a flight to Kannur followed by a Cab to Madikeri or Virajpet (Depending on which part of Coorg you want to go). If you are not comfortable with both, you always have the option of taking a flight to Bengaluru airport and then taking an airport bus service from the airport to Madikeri (Via Mysore).
2. By Train ( Mumbai To Mangalore Or Mysore)
Train Services are available from Mumbai to Mangalore. Average travel time is between 15 and 17 hours. Train Service is also available from Pune to Mysore. Once you arrive at Mangalore you will able to take a bus or rent a taxi to Madikeri. Mangalore to Madikeri is about 130 Km ( 3hrs) by road. Madikeri is well connected to Mangalore by bus. If you are traveling to other parts of Coorg such as Virajpet or Somwarpet, buses may not be as frequent, compared to Madikeri. However Coorg is a small district and other major towns are not more than 90 mins from Madikeri. If you are taking a taxi , any part of Coorg is within 4 hours from Mangalore.
If you manage to take a train to Mysore, from Maharashtra, traveling from Mysore to Coorg is very easy. Many Government buses ply between Mysore and Madikeri. You will find a bus almost every 30 mins to Madikeri. Mysore is also well connected to other towns in Coorg such as Virajpet , Gonikoppa and Somwarpet.
